In 1941, Idle Hour’s barrel-shaped structure derived as part of the "Programmatic architecture" movement, which was a direct link to the rise of the automobile when business owners in the 20's and 30's designed their buildings to catch the attention of quick passing motorists. Idle Hour is one of the last standing structures of this type in Los Angeles and now serves Americana cocktails and fare that are a definitive time stamp reflective of its original era.

With a reverence for restoring Los Angeles history, 1933 Group revitalized Highland Park Bowl to unveil eight refurbished bowling lanes, and revived the location as a playful gathering place for bowlers, imbibers, diners, and music enthusiasts alike. Originally established in 1927 during prohibition, Highland Park Bowl is now Los Angeles’s oldest operating bowling alley.

The Formosa first opened its doors in 1939: making its new debut in its 80th year. Located across from the then-Samuel Goldwyn studio, stars like Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, and Elvis Presley would pop into the legendary Formosa Cafe regularly for dining and drinks. On any given day, patrons might have seen Ava Gardner dancing past the old, red leather booths, or John Wayne nursing a late-night scotch (he was caught making scrambled eggs in our kitchen one morning, after reportedly passing out in a booth the night before).

Among the interior design restorations is the full reveal of the iconic and original red trolley car, dating back to 1904 and is confirmed to be the oldest surviving red train car in existence. Boxes of autographed celebrity photos and storage units of original memorabilia have made their way back into the Cafe.

We worked with local L.A. archivists and hospitality notables who are helping to inform the new food and cocktail menu: a retrospective of Formosa’s culinary evolution since the 1920’s. The new Formosa not only transports guests back in time to the glory days of Hollywood, but with its new menu, patrons are given another way to connect to a part of L.A.’s gastronomic history, too.

Because one of the most prominent decor themes in the Formosa is the old black and white headshots, we wanted to give the newer areas of the Formosa a part to play, too: to tell a storied history of Chinese Americans in Old Hollywood. To do this, the Formosa Cafe team collaborated with historians as well as the original family to procure all the original photos and artifacts and bring them back to their original home where they belong. With the new addition of the historic Yee Mee Loo bar area of the Formosa, we decided to tell a story about the influence of Chinese Americans in early Hollywood: from a collection of ephemera and photos, movie posters and headshots, it showcases major Chinese actors from a chronological standpoint from Hollywood’s golden age.

At Harlowe, the cocktails and décor illuminate the elegance and decadence of the Golden Age of Hollywood, with a playful list of classic and original cocktails, fountain and bottled drinks, homemade libations, and more. The menu is rounded out by a selection of old-meets-new dishes, which elegantly complement Harlowe's tastefully ambitious design.

The home for pre-prohibition tipples, Oldfield’s offers boutique, artisanal spirits and a laid back, neighborhood-bar experience with homage to decades past. Dim lighting, French bistro barstools, and white subway tiles compose a thoughtful and comfortable place for cocktails enthusiasts to experience sophisticated, yet familiar drinks.

In the heart of Hollywood, 1933 converted a Savannah Townhouse to become Sassafras, a warm, welcoming little piece of the South, highlighting deep-rooted southern history and distinct flavors through its cocktail menu. The design is reminiscent of the bayou, with plants flourishing throughout, wicker chairs, portraits of Southern patriarchs, antique mirrors, and a creaky conveyer belt above the bar that displays bottle-aged drinks that are in constant rotation.

Bigfoot Lodge is a beloved Eastside destination, offering a woodsy ambience for city-dwellers and music enthusiasts alike to relish in an expansive whiskey list, and snuggle up next to Bigfoot, Smokey the Bear and other charming taxidermy. Locals are invited to revel in nightly activities such as bingo, trivia, comedy, and live music.

Legend has it Bigfoot himself enjoys close proximity to the beach, which dawned the creation of Bigfoot West.

A friendly neighborhood bar with a "Cheers"-like sensibility, this cozy log cabin transports eager Angelenos to grandpa's cabin at story time. Its whiskey shelf is packed with coveted bottles that span the globe and entice the moonshiner in all of us. A crafty beer and shot selection –pairing quality spirits and brews– begs the question, "why drink anything else?"

Bigfoot West has become a local favorite for comfortable imbibing and stream-of-booziness banter: whether with a bartender, stranger, or Bigfoot himself.

Thirsty Crow is a timeless, neighborhood watering hole with an offering of over 100 whiskies, including 60+ small batch bourbons, and an array of cocktail creations that evolve with the freshness of the seasons. With a nightly presence of music and revelry, guests will feel at home whether drinking a Negroni or a Pabst Blue Ribbon.

La Cuevita - A new, Old World Mexican grotto set in the heart of the Highland Park, featuring traditional agave spirits. The bar showcases an impressive selection of tequilas and mescals while also featuring the same type of distinctive concoctions and spirits that the 1933 Group team has become known for around the city.
